Letter to OpenDoc Developers

April 11, 1997

Dear OpenDoc Developer,

As many of you know, as part of its future technology directions, Apple recently announced it plans to reduce its investment in OpenDoc and Cyberdog technologies. Because we value your support of the Macintosh platform, we would like to provide you with more detailed information concerning the future of OpenDoc and Cyberdog.

The next release of these technologies is planned for Mac OS 8, scheduled for July 1997. There is currently no plan to ship significant updates in the future nor for Apple to port OpenDoc to the OPENSTEP APIs (sometimes referred to as the "Yellow Box") in Apple's next-generation OS, code-named Rhapsody. However, Apple expects that OpenDoc will be delivered on Rhapsody as part of the Mac OS layer (also referred to as the "Blue Box").

Increasingly, Apple plans to move its component technology resources to Java and the OPENSTEP APIs in Rhapsody. We invite you to visit Apple's Java web site and the Rhapsody web site. We believe this combination will be a powerful one for both developers and customers.

In addition, CI Labs has been dissolved by its Board of Directors and is in the process of transitioning its key assets to the CI Labs sponsor companies including Apple, IBM and Just Systems. If you have questions regarding CI Labs, please feel free to contact Teri Dahlbeck at 408-974-8908 or Sylvia France at 415-632-1540.

Please refer to the latest FAQ regarding OpenDoc, Cyberdog and CI Labs.
