Function of the Election Committee

The Election Committee is to consist of 800 members, who must be Hong Kong permanent residents. It is responsible for electing the Chief Executive. The members come from 38 subsectors representing various trades, professions, labour and social welfare groups as well as district organisations.

The Election Committee will also be responsible for returning a Legislative Council member in a by-election should a vacancy arise among the six Legislative Councillors elected by the Election Committee during the second term of the Legislative Council.

Composition of the 800-member Election Committee:

(1) 664 members elected from 35 subsectors;
(2) 40 members nominated by the religious subsector; and
(3) 96 ex-officio members (Hong Kong deputies to the National People's Congress and Legislative Council members).
