Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to inaugurate first-of-its-kind skate park in Sahakar Nagar, on Sunday, April 19.
The entire project is estimated at Rs 62 lakhs. The project is a brainchild of deputy mayor Aba Bagul and was proposed in 2014.
The park, located near to the Babasaheb Ambedkar Krida Sankul, will be open all day for skaters. “This is the first skate park in India which is funded by the city's corporation. India has got talent and we want kids here to be exposed to every kind of sport. This skate park will have a training centre for children who want to ace in this sport,” said Bagul.
A minimum of Rs 5 will be charged per day for maintenance.
Meanwhile, avid skaters are excited with the civic body’s decision in building the skate park. Akshay Gore, 20, who works in a multinational company, said, “In the city, we have a small skater community of nearly 15 to 20 members. We are extremely happy about the inauguration of the park. The skate park will help in improving some stunts and also give us a space to practice.”
Akshay, along with his colleagues, will be training children in the skateboard training centre. “Most kids cannot afford to buy skateboards. A few private companies have donated us skateboards to teach these kids. If such encouragement is provided by both public and private sectors for every sport, our country will produce some of the finest players,” added Akshay.
