To successfully complete the exchange application process, please follow step 1 through 5.
The purpose of the exchange program is to allow students to study at a partner university without being required to pay international student fees. Students can gain a new perspective during their academic experience by spending one or two terms at a partner institution as part of a student exchange with one of our more than 250 partner institutions in some 52 countries. The exchange program is an integral part of University of Ottawa’s strategic plan to allow our students to become true global citizens. It aims to train graduates who are skilled and open to the world by offering them this international dimension.
One of the International Office’s roles is to communicate information on how to participate in an exchange to the University community. Our office ensures that study-abroad participants are well prepared by providing administrative services before, during and after their study period at the host institution.
In order to be eligible for the Student Exchange Program, you must:
If you are a full-time University of Ottawa student and would like to do part of your studies at another university, consider the University of Ottawa’s exchange program. To learn more about the exchange programs please attend one of the mandatory information sessions being offered over the coming months.

The European credit transfer system (ECTS) is used by several European institutions, with which the University of Ottawa has signed bilateral agreements. When faced with a multitude of different educational systems, the ECTS is a viable solution since it allows students studying abroad to organize a program of study which is reasonable in terms of workload.
Generally speaking, the European workload for one academic year corresponds to 60 ECTS (30 units at the University of Ottawa). The workload for one semester is equal to 30 ECTS (15 units at the University of Ottawa).
Some European institutions do not use ECTS yet and some non-European partner institutions have a credit system different from ours.

Example of an undergraduate normal course load – minimum 4 courses per semester:
Example of a graduate normal course load – maximum 3 courses per semester:
Example of a graduate normal course load – minimum 2 courses per term:
Some partner institutions use a system similar to the one used by the University of Ottawa. University of Ottawa students must then register in a minimum of 4 (for undergraduate students) or 2 courses (for graduate students) or a maximum of 5 (for undergraduate students) or 3 courses (for graduate students) per term.
For courses taught in English or in French:
If you wish to study in English or French at your host institution and it is not your current language of instruction, you can prove your language proficiency with one of the following:
*If you do not have any of the above, you will need to complete a proficiency test through the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.
For courses taught in any other language:
Please note that some host institutions may require an additional proof of language proficiency. This should be provided only once you have been accepted to the exchange program by the uOttawa International Office. The host institution will advise you if an additional proof of language proficiency is required.

Before leaving for the host institution, students must purchase comprehensive health and travel insurance (including evacuation and repatriation), to cover the entire duration of the stay abroad. It must meet the requirements of the host institution and the University of Ottawa.
Medical insurance policies vary from one country to another. It is suggested to subscribe to supplementary insurance, since some medical treatments abroad are not fully covered and the costs incurred must be borne directly by the student. If you already have a medical insurance policy which includes supplementary health insurance, it is useful to confirm the kind of coverage you have with your insurance company.
Participants should inform in writing the health insurance office of their province of origin of their intention of taking part in an exchange.
All outgoing exchange students must complete pre-departure online modules available on Brightspace. The selected candidates will automatically be registered to them. Failure to complete the modules will result in an automatic cancellation of the exchange.
Due to the current COVID19 pandemic, the in-person pre-departure sessions are all cancelled. You are only required to complete the online modules. If you have any questions or concerns; if you want to discuss any subjects related to your exchange, you will be able to do so on an interactive online forum. More details will be provided once students have accepted their offer.
If you do not already have one, apply for your passport. Please allow enough time for processing.
Generally, your passport must be valid for six months after the date on which you plan to return to Canada!
Your Letter of Acceptance from your host university must be submitted to the International Office (IO):
An information kit from the host institution may arrive with your letter of acceptance:

SCHOLARSHIPS, FINANCIAL AID & BURSARIES
The University of Ottawa, namely the Student Mobility Fund and the faculties, offer mobility scholarships to all students selected to take part in an exchange program through the International Office.
Students who take part in an international exchange receive a scholarship of $500 for a summer program*, $1,000 for one term (Fall or Winter) or $2,000 for two terms (Fall and Winter) abroad. Students who take part in an exchange within Canada receive a scholarship of $500 for one term (Fall or Winter) or $1,000 for two terms (Fall and Winter).
For students in the Faculty of Law (Common Law), the amounts are as follows:
The mobility scholarship will be deposited in the students’ uOttawa account at the beginning of August (for students leaving for a full academic year or for the Fall term only) or at the beginning of December (for students leaving for the Winter term ). N.B. If you cancel your participation in the exchange, you must reimburse the scholarship either entirely or partially within 30 days.
*Some exclusions apply
The International Office’s personnel holds student mobility to heart and want to reward student ambassadors from the University of Ottawa. The International Office’s staff members therefore offer a number of scholarships worth $500 each to the winners of the Video Challenge for international exchange students.
To be considered for the award, a student must :
Candidates will be evaluated and selected based on the following three criteria:
You may submit your video entry by sending the link to a shared document (ex. Google drive) or a video sharing platform (ex. YouTube, Vimeo) to outgoing@uOttawa.ca. Please be sure to include your full name and student number in the email, and use the subject Staff Scholarship Application. The deadline to submit a video is April 17th, 2020. Recipients of these awards will be announced at the beginning of May.
Students eligible for financial aid continue to receive it during the exchange period. Please clearly indicate your intention of taking part in an exchange program on the financial aid form.
The amount of financial aid is calculated according to the Canadian cost of living rather than that of the host country. The number of weeks however is adjusted according to the host institution’s university calendar. To find out more about financial aid, please contact the Financial Aid and Awards Office. It is your responsibility to ensure that all financial aid matters are resolved prior to your departure.

UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
In general, if you are eligible for a renewable scholarship offered through the University of Ottawa Scholarship Program before going on an exchange, you will be eligible to receive it during your exchange. Since the cumulative grade point average remains the same during the exchange, you should be able to maintain the scholarship upon returning to the University of Ottawa. To ensure your eligibility, contact the Financial Aid and Awards Office.
FINANCIAL AID AND AWARDS OFFICE - INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Visit the Financial Aid and Awards Office website to search the database of scholarships available to students travelling abroad.
We strongly suggest that you visit diplomatic missions located in Ottawa early in the fall. In addition to providing useful information, diplomatic missions also have valuable information on several scholarships offered to Canadians wishing to study in their country. Deadlines for submitting an application are often in early January and February. Therefore, it is important to visit the missions during the fall term.
Finalize your course registration at the host institution:
IMPORTANT: Make sure you register for your uOttawa courses in time for the upcoming term.
The International Office aims to ensure you have a quality academic experience in a secure environment. The pre-departure workshop will provide you important information to help you have a healthy and safe experience at your host institution. The workshop will also provide information on what to do in the event of an emergency. Make sure that you are aware of the resources available through the International Relations Office of the host institution to help you in the event of any difficulties.
After you have contacted the proper local authorities, should an emergency arise while you are abroad, you should:
“I hate this place. When is the next flight to Ottawa?”
The tourist’s glamour may not be the resident’s reality. It is common for people to suffer from some form of culture shock after arriving in a foreign setting. This normal reaction to a new environment occurs while you are outside of your comfort zone. When adapting to a foreign culture, you could experience a range of emotions from euphoria and yearning for home. Culture shock is a term used to describe what people experience when they are overwhelmed by unfamiliar surroundings and conditions, resulting in a sense of isolation.
Download our helpful brochure on culture shock for more information
At the end of your exchange, you must submit to the International Office (IO) the returning students' questionnaire (PDF) based on your experience abroad. These questionnaires will be made available for promotional use to students interested in going on exchange. Feedback is very important to ensure the continued success of our exchange program. Failure to submit the questionnaire will result in you having to reimburse the full amount of your Mobility Scholarship.
Upon your return to Canada, an official transcript from your host institution will either be sent to you or to the International Office. If you receive the documents, you must submit one copy to the International Office for administrative purposes (you will keep all original copies). If the IO receives your transcript, we will contact you to come retrieve the original copy at our office. In either case, the IO will send a copy to your faculty. Please note that you must submit your transcript in order for the unit transfer to be done at uOttawa.
The International Office has the pleasure of organizing a Returning Student’s evening in the month of September. You will be informed by e-mail of the date and time of the evening.
Some students returning from exchange programs have experienced worse culture shock on their return to Canada than on their arrival abroad. Why? The experience of living abroad will change you – although you may not even notice the changes. Part of the pre-departure session will include how to prepare for your return to Canada and strategies to adopt while abroad and back home to ensure a successful reintegration into your life in Canada.
As a participant in the Buddy Program, you will be paired with an exchange student who will study at the University of Ottawa for either one term or for a full academic year. Becoming a buddy is an excellent opportunity to meet people from other cultures and to improve linguistic capabilities. The Buddy Program can also be a good way of helping with reverse culture shock as it allows you to share your experience with other students who are facing the challenges and joys of a new environment.
With your help, the exchange student will adapt more easily to new cultural surroundings. On a voluntary basis, you could meet the exchange student upon his or her arrival at the Ottawa airport, train or bus station and accompany him or her to his or her place of residence. You could also help the exchange student with the necessary administrative steps and introduce him or her to other Canadians. It is entirely up to you to determine the extent of your involvement with the exchange student.
