Robert Williams knows that most people aren’t familiar with the Michigan State kiwi. He just doesn’t understand why that is. Williams, a Spartan who earned his doctorate in anthropology from MSU in 1980, now owns and operates Broken Shovel Kiwi Farm in Washington state, where he grows nine varieties of hardy kiwi.
During a recent review of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s recovery plans for more than 200 endangered and threatened vertebrate species in the United States, MSU researchers made an interesting discovery. They found that two-thirds of these species could benefit from a gene-boosting diversity strategy known as genetic rescue.
MSU is often referred to as a living-learning laboratory. The university connects Spartans and visitors to new spaces, opportunities and, most importantly, to one another on the main East Lansing campus and beyond. MSU also looks to expand avenues for students, faculty and staff to learn, thrive and succeed.

Cholesterol contributes to diabetic retinopathy: George Abela, chief of MSU’s Division of Cardiology, says that these cholesterol crystals are like the crystals found in atherosclerotic plaque that can form in arteries and cause heart attacks, a finding discovered in his lab.

MSU used an inclusive and comprehensive strategic planning process to create a shared vision for the future and a common set of principles and values to guide our work.
To recognize the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion as a foundation for university, MSU is using a comprehensive DEI planning process focusing on those values and working in collaboration with the overall strategic planning process.
The RVSM Strategic Plan stems from work by leading researchers and experts in the field to develop a plan for survivor services, prevention efforts, and climate and culture change initiatives.
