The University of Bristol logo is made up of two elements – the graphic block and the logotype:
The graphic block is derived from the University coat of arms, with icons representing the University's founders and benefactors – sun for Wills, dolphin for Colston, horse for Fry. The ship and the castle are based on the medieval city seal of Bristol. The open book of learning completes the graphic block. The logotype is Bembo, a serene and versatile typeface cut in 1929 and with Renaissance origins.
The graphic block and the logotype should always appear together and their fixed relationship should never be modified.
The logo should be used for the purposes of identification only and should not be used as graphic art.
The logo should never appear smaller than its minimum size which is when the graphic block is 10mm square.
The logo should never appear larger than its optimum size which is when the graphic block is 17mm square.
On printed matter, the logo has a minimum isolation area around it which should always remain clear of other text or graphics. This clear space is the height/width of the castle on all four sides. Also, see publications.
The principal colours of the logo are University Red for the graphic block and black for the logotype. Whenever possible, the logo should appear in these two colours.
The logo should never be reproduced in any other two-colour combination.

The logo may also appear in black, in any clearly visible single colour or as white out of a colour (see also coloured backgrounds)

When using the logo against a light background, the icons within the graphic block should appear in the background colour. In other words, they should only appear white on a white background. The logo should only appear on flat background colours and should never be superimposed on any graphic or photographic image.
